It’s the time of year that I always look upon with trepidation and dread. For many, the new year is a night for celebration, parties, large and small, and people gathering together to ring out the old and ring in the new year. Some of us prefer to celebrate more privately and without the throngs of revelers. However we chose to celebrate, in groups or alone, you can be certain that the talk of intentions is all about. Year after year, I make numerous intentions for the coming year that are subject to starts and stops, until finally, I throw my hands up in frustration and give up. This year, I intend to do things differently.
Yes, instead of making a long list of intentions that I cannot possibly complete, I’ve decided to make one intention which will make 2013 richer than any year before. My intention is simple. It is to live my life in the present moment. I spend an inordinate amount of my time ruminating on the past and worrying about what the future will bring. While doing so, my life and all of its’ precious moment fly by, oftentimes without me being aware of them.
This year, I will make my best effort to be alert to those moments when I am wont to languish in the past or the future. I intend to watch my grandchildren as they go about their day. No one lives in the moment better than a young child. They give all of their attention to what they are doing and nothing more. They are not experts in multi-tasking like most of the adults around them. For a child, living in the moment is all that they know. So, I intend to look to them as teachers /guides on my journey to living in the present. Perhaps, along the way, I will accomplish some of the very things that I’ve given up on in past years. What I know for sure is that I will most definitely spend more quality time with my grandchildren. Two thousand-thirteen looks to be a banner year for me. I trust that your’s is amazing as well.
