Just This Moment

Hours ago I was relishing the beautiful day here in the Texas Hill Country. The melodic chorus of wind chimes and birds, roosters crowing, dogs barking and the distant sound of children playing fill the air. For once, I was in the moment, right there and no where else. Listening, feeling, sensing the world around me. Why, I wondered, is this not a common occurrence? Simple, because I, and I am certain that I am not alone, spend inordinate amount of time ruminating about the past or wondering about the future. Our thoughts of the past are replete with “whys.” Why did I do this? Why did I say that? Why? Why? Why? The future is no different. When this happens, I will ________ (fill in the blank)? What if this? What if that? All of these musings take us away from what is right in front of us–this very moment. As I typed this sentence, countless precious moments have passed by like the rush of the wind, irretrievable and lost forever. So whatever you are doing and wherever you may be, just stop, and smell the roses. Remember, as Babatunde Olatunji reminds us, “yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift. That’s why we call it the present.” Live it. Don’t let it pass you by.  Blessings.
