Be It, So They Can Live It

As the mother of two grown women and g’mother to two beautiful little girls, I found this blurb meaningful enough to cut it out of some magazine. Regrettably, I cannot remember  magazine in which I discovered it, so I am unable to give them proper mention.

In any case, the quote struck me because we exist in a world where, in many places, including the United States, similarly situated women make less than men, for equal work. In come countries, women are unable to even hold the same jobs as men. Therefore, it is important, no crucial, that each of us women serve as role models for young girls and young women everywhere. This quote reminds us that they are looking up to us to guide their way.

In bathrooms, boardrooms, buses, bagel shops, and everywhere else, we all need to imagine a little girl following us around, repeating everything we do. Think about all the things you want for yourself and your daughters, granddaughters, and girls everywhere–teach them by living it yourself. ~Nell Merlino, in Stepping Out of Line Lessons For Women Who Want It There Way in Love, in Life, and at Work.

Life has taught me that love does not consist
in gazing at each other but in looking outward
together in the same direction. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

The Gift

A simple wind chimeImage via Wikipedia
Today, I am sitting in the room that we refer to as our “study,” and the wind is racing its way around our home.  As it does so, I hear the score played by the various wind chimes hung outside the house.  When the wind intensifies, the sound played by the wind chimes is akin to the first recital of eager but untrained students–tortured and grating; whereas, as the wind blows gently, the music is calm, inviting and soothing. Suddenly, I am overcome with gratitude. I have the ability to hear–the good, the bad and everything in between. It is a gift that I often take for granted, but today, I stop for a moment to acknowledge, and give thanks for this precious gift.   Blessings.

Refuse Permission

“Negative emotions need our permission before they enter into our hearts. Bar their entry. Why let trouble into your heart, given that all it can do is evict that more legitimate resident, joy? Similarly, no one can force you to be unhappy, you always have the right of refusal.”
