Writing That Must Be Written – Do or Die | Long and Luxe

If you are a writer, or would be writer, you must read this post. I share it with you because I identify with it strongly. I identify with it because it eloquently states my reason for writing. In my case, I began this personal journey blog as a form of self-expression and without any illusions that I would attract the masses. I wanted a platform to write and nothing more. I hasten to add that I appreciate and am blessed by each person who honors me by following this blog. However, as a born and raised New Orleanian would say, that’s lagniappe (For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it means ‘an extra bonus.’). The bottom line is that I love to write, and if you do too, this post is for you.

Creative Writing Saturday

Blue skies

Blue skies (Photo credit: Ennor)

In considering the post for today, I read stories, essays, poems, haiku’s and more, looking for something that is, to me, both meaningful and relevant. As I did so, music played in the background and I could not resist singing along to some of the lyrics–that’s when i hit me. What is more creative than song lyrics written by musical artists and their muses?

Perhaps, I am simply aging myself, but this week, I am posting the lyrics to a song from one of my favorite musical artists of all time, Marvin Gaye. He was an artist long before his time and based on information obtained here on Song Facts, considered himself “a student of Don Juan and Carlos Castaneda.” He published this prophetic song in 1971, but it still holds true 43 years later. I share in his lament and I hope that you will too.

Mercy, Mercy Me (The Ecology) Lyrics

“Woo ah, mercy mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows from the north and south and east
Woo mercy, mercy me, mercy father
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas, fish full of mercury
Ah oh mercy, mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Radiation under ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying
Oh mercy, mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land
How much more abuse from man can she stand?
Oh, na na…
My sweet Lord… No
My Lord… My sweet Lord”

If you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing him sing the song, you might enjoy hearing and watching this video. I urge you to listen to it and tell me what you think. (I apologize in advance for the preceding commercial, but you can skip it in a matter of seconds.)

Earthy Browns & Greens

Earthy Brown & Green

On this beautiful Spring day, I see the ubiquitous color green, in the abundant plants and trees all around me, as well as, the rich brown of the soil that feeds and nourishes the plants that produce the food that we eat and the beautiful flowers that we enjoy. Brown is a predominant color on the planet, along with green. Brown is comforting and stabilizing, while green is balancing and rejuvenating, just what we all need to help us deal with the stresses of modern life. What a meaningful color combination.

Week 13, The 52 Project

20140330-104332.jpg

I apologize that I have to edit this post. I just realized that I am labeling the posts as though the week begins on Sunday instead of Monday. As a result, I am one week ahead. Thus, the correction. Thanks for understanding. xo

This is Week 13 of The 52 Project. This week, I post a photo of my 7-year-old granddaughter, D. She is very creative and, among other things, is always creating movies, most in which she acts. This shot was taken while she took a short break from her filming. The pink flower is a prop for the movie but I think that it draws the eye to her beautiful, pensive face. I love her natural creativity and the joy that she approaches everything she does. She has a bright, joyful light and spirit that touches everyone and  everything around her. She is a shining jewel in this world. I love this little girl and I love this photograph.
